Hims & Hers and ABC Fitness Drive Change in Digital Health and Wellness

In today’s fitness industry news, two major developments underscore the growing convergence of digital health, wellness, and accessibility. Hims & Hers Health, a leading digital healthcare platform, has announced the launch of a clinically supported weight loss program in Canada, driven by the anticipated availability of generic semaglutide. At the same time, ABC Fitness CEO Bill Davis has shared key strategies for future-proofing fitness businesses in a data-driven, post-pandemic world during his appearance on the All Things Fitness and Wellness podcast.

Hims & Hers Expands to Canada with Low-Cost Weight Loss Program Featuring Generic Semaglutide

Hims & Hers Health, a leading digital health platform, announced plans to launch a clinically supported weight loss program in Canada, marking the company’s official entry into the Canadian healthcare market. The upcoming program will leverage the anticipated availability of generic semaglutide, a proven treatment for obesity, to offer a lower-cost alternative to traditional weight loss medications.

The Canadian rollout aligns with Hims & Hers’ global expansion strategy following its recent acquisition of ZAVA, a prominent digital health provider operating across Europe. This move underscores the company’s commitment to improving healthcare access in regions where cost and availability remain significant barriers.

According to Statistics Canada, nearly two-thirds of Canadian adults are classified as overweight or living with obesity. While branded semaglutide has demonstrated strong clinical outcomes, its price tag—often exceeding C$200 per month without integrated care—has limited its accessibility. Generic formulations, expected to enter the market at lower costs, offer a new opportunity for scalable, affordable obesity treatment.

“Canada is a major opportunity to show what affordable, high-quality weight loss care can look like,” said Andrew Dudum, co-founder and CEO of Hims & Hers. “As generic semaglutide becomes available for the first time globally, we’re focused on making it truly accessible, by combining affordability with trusted, personalized care at scale.”

The new program will be delivered through the Hims & Hers digital platform, providing Canadian users with 24/7 access to licensed healthcare providers, customized treatment plans, and ongoing clinical support. The company emphasized that its offering goes beyond just medication access—it includes a holistic model of care aimed at long-term results.

“Despite North America being the largest GLP-1 market, many still lack crucial access,” said David Meinertz, General Manager International at Hims & Hers. “Making affordable, holistic obesity treatment accessible has the potential to help strengthen the local healthcare system and unlock the potential for millions of Canadians to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.”

This expansion into Canada is part of Hims & Hers’ broader goal to extend its digital health footprint worldwide. With ZAVA now part of its portfolio, the company is well-positioned to bring its hybrid model of telehealth, prescription access, and continuous support to additional markets where healthcare affordability and access remain critical challenges.

Future-Proofing the Fitness Industry

In a recent episode of All Things Fitness and Wellness, ABC Fitness CEO Bill Davis joined host Krissy Vann to discuss the key trends and technologies reshaping the global fitness landscape. Davis, whose company powers operations for over 40,000 fitness businesses in more than 100 countries, shared strategic insights on how the industry is evolving post-pandemic—and what operators must do to stay ahead.

“This is a market that needs to be incredibly nimble and adaptive as emerging technologies pick up pace,” said Davis, noting how consumer expectations have shifted dramatically in recent years. He pointed to the growing role of wearables, biometric data, and AI-driven personalization in driving retention and engagement.

With the release of ABC’s 2025 Wellness Watch, Davis reported promising momentum: an 8% increase in check-ins and a 27% rise in new memberships. Gen Z, in particular, is leading the charge, now accounting for 16% of new gym members.

“Gen Z’s fitness and wellness IQ is particularly high. They know what they want and they’re prioritizing it,” said Davis. “I would not be at all surprised to see that 16% eclipse 20-plus percent in the coming years.”

During the episode, Davis also addressed the impact of disinformation in the digital wellness space, emphasizing the ongoing role fitness professionals play in guiding consumers toward credible, personalized solutions.

“Club operators and fitness professionals can still serve an incredibly valuable role in helping individuals navigate that disinformation and get to a place where what they should be focused on in fact are the right things,” he said.

As ABC Fitness continues to monitor global market trends, Davis encouraged operators to leverage Gen Z as a source of innovation and to stay attuned to the needs of emerging demographics—from younger members to midlife women exploring wellness through new life stages.
